About PubVentures
PubVentures is a site designed to help you find your way around the pubs, clubs, and bars of the world. All you need to do is enter a start point, and end point and click go!
Creating a PubVenture is a great way of getting to know a new area or even for finding some of those hidden treasures in your home town. Using this app takes out the planning and mapping required to organise a fun night and lets you get on with the important bit. Drinking! Each PubVenture comes with a handy map, a list of the names of the destinations, in order, and a Google Place rating to see where others have enjoyed themselves the most. Beer lovers will also be delighted to know that by clicking the name of the pub in the list you can see a guide of the top beers found at each establishment, as voted by users of the social beer network untappd.
There are a few things to bear in mind whilst using this website however, all is indeed not perfect. The app uses Google's places service, which from time to time will include closed venues, or private establishments. Many restaurants and hotels also like to let Google know they have a bar and these will come up in the list of results, but may not be suitable for your PubVenture. What's more is that this app is limited to only finding 8 way points along your journey, due to Google Directions API constraints. With your donations and with advertising revenue it may be possible for me to extend this capability to up to an incredible 23 stops for those monster pub crawls! There is also limited results for top beers in a large number of locations, a pub or bar must exist on Foursquare to appear on untappd, and untappd must have had enough check-ins at that location to generate a top beers list. You can help solve this by downloading untappd for iPhone and Android and checking in the location of your beers.
About the creator
I am Ryan Wood, A Computer Science student in Canterbury,UK and the sole developer of PubVentures. This app came about as a rejected idea at a hack-a-thon that I wasn't willing to let go of. The core functionality took maybe 3-5 hours of work and then all the rest of the nice bits and pieces I've added count for way more time than that. I have done some web development before, in various forms, and I thought this would be a fun and interesting way to help me improve my skills! There is still a lot I hope to do with PubVentures so watch this space. Altough most of the changes will be made behind the scenes to improve the efficiency of the app, and to reduce the number of API calls, there may well be some design changes along the way too!
